This item is something of a rarity for me, viz : an artwork ( which I completed in acrylic on a canvas board ) rather than as a drawing. My use of it as an imaginary book cover design with text is of more recent date.

The Wilkie Collins novel ( which I have used as a link for the design ) was first published in 1882 by Harper & Bros, of Franklin Square, New York. There have been numerous other editions published since.

The fictional Queen of Hearts is also the subject of a Nusery Rhyme - by an anonymous author - which runs as follows :-

"The Queen of Hearts she baked some tarts,
all on a summers day. The Knave of Hearts, he stole those tarts and took them clean away. The King of Hearts, called for some tarts, and beat the Knave full sore. The Knave of Hearts brought back the tarts, and vowed he'd steal no more.

The Queen however, is perhaps best known as a character in Lewis Carroll's fairy tale : Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, where she appears in Chapter X1.
